Leak Detection Questions & Answers

Straight answers to the questions Plant City homeowners and businesses ask most. Each service and area page also has its own FAQ.

General

What is Plant City Leak Pros?

A free 24/7 phone line that connects callers in Plant City and nearby towns with independent local leak detection providers. We are a referral service and don't perform the work ourselves.

Which ZIP codes do you cover?

33563, 33565, 33566 and 33567 in Plant City, plus 33527 (Dover), 33584 (Seffner), 33594 and 33596 (Valrico and Bloomingdale), and 33510 and 33511 (Brandon).

Is there a form or email I can use instead of calling?

No. Phone is the only contact method, so you reach a person right away instead of waiting for a reply. Call (813) 303-9621 any hour.

Will the same company always answer?

Calls are routed by ZIP code and availability, so the provider can vary. Each provider is independent and responsible for its own work.

Signs and Self-Checks

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

Watch for an unexplained jump in your water bill, a meter that moves when nothing is running, the sound of water with fixtures off, warm spots on floors, musty odors, or new stains and bubbling paint. The symptom checker helps narrow it down.

How do I do a water meter test?

Turn off every faucet, appliance and irrigation zone, note the meter reading or watch the small leak indicator, and wait without using water. Any movement points to a leak somewhere after the meter.

Is a running toilet really a leak?

Yes. A flapper or fill valve that doesn't seal can waste a surprising amount of water silently. A few drops of food coloring in the tank that show up in the bowl without flushing confirms it. See toilet leaks.

How do I know if my pool is leaking or just evaporating?

A bucket test compares the pool's water loss with a bucket of water set on the step. If the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket over the same period, a leak is likely. Read more on pool leak detection.

The Visit

Does leak detection mean tearing up my floors and walls?

Usually not. Providers use non-invasive tools like acoustic listening, thermal imaging, moisture meters, line tracing and tracer gas to mark a specific spot before any opening is made.

How long does finding a leak take?

It depends on the property and the type of leak. A single fixture leak can be quick, while a slab or long buried line may take longer. The provider can give you a better idea on the call.

Should I be home during the visit?

Yes, ideally. The provider will need access to the meter, the main shut-off, water heater, pool equipment or crawl areas, and it helps to walk through what you've noticed.

Will I get written findings?

Ask the provider before booking. Many can provide notes and photos of what was found, which also help with repairs and any insurance claim.

Quotes and Insurance

How do I get a quote?

Call (813) 303-9621 and describe what you're seeing. The local provider you're connected with can give you a free quote and explain the options before any work begins.

Does homeowners insurance cover leak detection?

Coverage depends on your policy and what caused the damage. Your insurer decides. Documentation of the leak's location and cause helps, see insurance leak documentation.

Do you repair the leak too?

Many providers can repair what they find or recommend options like a spot repair, reroute or repipe. That's arranged directly with the provider. See repair and repipe options.

Emergencies

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Close the main water shut-off, turn off power to any wet area at the breaker, move valuables away from the water, and then call. Our emergency page lists more first steps.

I smell gas. Should I call you?

Leave the building first and call your gas or propane supplier, or 911, from outside. Don't use switches or flames. After it's safe, a provider can help test the line. See gas line testing.

Are you open on weekends and holidays?

Yes. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
